Foot and Ankle

Conditions We Treat

Our feet and ankles, and their position in relation to the ground, our footwear, and the remainder of the body, define the alignment and movement of other body parts. Disorders of the foot and ankle may not only cause local pain, but are a common cause of knee, hip, and back pain. When Dr. Kahn performs a foot and ankle examination, he analyzes the structure and function of the foot and ankle, evaluates your footwear for clues as to how you walk or run, and provides recommendations regarding the proper type of footwear and/or orthotics necessary to maximize your function and minimize your pain, which may be caused by the following conditions:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendonitis and calcaneal bursitis
  • Ankle sprains and strains
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Morton’s neuroma
  • Sinus tarsi syndrome

Diagnostic studies

Foot and ankle x-rays, while commonly utilized, do not demonstrate soft tissue disorders, and unless done in the standing position, may not fully explain the cause of many foot and ankle related disorders. MRI scans are excellent for showing both bony and soft tissue anatomy, but are done in a non-weightbearing position, in which many patient’s symptoms may be minimal or absent. Our practice can perform dynamic imaging of the foot and ankle, and neurological testing when numbness or tingling is present using:

  • Diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSK-US)
  • Electrodiagnostic testing including nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG)

When foot and ankle pain does not require surgical treatment, or when non-surgical treatment is the more appropriate approach, Dr. Kahn performs a variety of ultrasound guided office based interventional procedures, including:

  • Tarsal tunnel (anterior and posterior) injections
  • Injections of various toe, foot, and ankle joints
  • Injections of Achilles tendon sheath and calcaneal bursa
  • Aspiration of ganglion cysts
  • Plantar fascia injections
